Ten sites rank on page one of Google for “web design manchester” in the UK on 6 July 2026. We pulled the SERP, opened every landing page, and checked one thing: does the buyer see a price without filling in a form. Two of them do. Eight of them do not. Here is the audit.
The SERP as it stood on 6 July 2026

Two out of eight agencies show a price
Strip out the Reddit thread and the Bark listing and eight of the top ten results are agencies. Two of those agencies (Designers Up North and Manchester Web Agency) show published prices. That is a 25 percent transparency rate on the page-one Google SERP for the largest web-design keyword in the North West.
The two that show prices sit at opposite ends of the market. Designers Up North pitches “from £2,000” for a business site and “from £3,000” for WooCommerce, both plus VAT. Manchester Web Agency pitches £499 for three pages in one week at the bottom, £1,499 for full ecommerce in three weeks at the top. Between those two published prices there is a £2,500 gap and no visible options on the Manchester SERP.
What form-first gating actually does to the buyer
Take a Salford Quays photographer who needs a new portfolio site. The Manchester SERP sends her to eight agencies with no visible price. To compare, she has to:
- Fill in a form on Pixel Kicks, Bamboo Manchester, MadeByShape, Design by Future, 22 Group, Sam Heaton, and Duo Design.
- Wait for callbacks. On a typical agency schedule that is one to four working days each.
- Explain her project seven times.
- Get seven quotes back over the following week or two, in seven different formats, on seven different tier structures.
Or she can send one line to Designers Up North and Manchester Web Agency, see the prices on their pages already, and compare only those two. The transparency does the filtering for her. Everything else on the SERP costs her time.
Domain Rating pattern
Ranks two through nine are held by agencies with DR 48 to 72. That is the profile of an agency that has been buying, earning, or writing links for five to ten years. MadeByShape at DR 72 with 13,162 monthly GB visits to the homepage alone is the outlier: heavy content, heavy link profile. The Reddit thread at position four is DR 95 for reddit.com as a whole, not for that specific comment.
The signal for a small-business buyer: the Manchester head-term SERP is compounded link authority. It rewards the sites that have been publishing for a long time, not necessarily the sites that price the smallest jobs correctly. That is one reason ring-town searches (“web design salford”, “web design altrincham”, “web design warrington”) often surface completely different, smaller, cheaper shops than the head-term SERP does.
The form-first gate is a filter, not a favour
Every hidden-price site on the SERP frames the enquiry as a favour to the buyer: “discuss your project”, “start a project”, “get a free proposal”. In practice it is a filter for the agency, not for the buyer. It excludes small budgets before a human has to write a polite decline. That is a fair sales move at £15,000 project floors and above. Below that floor it just slows down a Bramhall florist or an Urmston solicitor who has £2,000 to spend and needs a decision this week.

How we ran the audit
SERP data: Ahrefs SERP overview endpoint, keyword “web design manchester”, country GB, top 10 positions, 6 July 2026. DR and traffic figures are Ahrefs’s own estimates on the day. Price visibility: we fetched each URL that ranked and read every visible price on the landing page and on any obvious pricing / packages URL in the navigation. “No prices visible” means we opened the page and could not see a price. If an agency has a published price sheet at a URL we did not find, tell us and we will update the table.
