Where the SEO gaps are: keyword difficulty for web design across the Greater Manchester ring

Not every “web design + town” search in Greater Manchester is contested. Some are locked shut by long-standing agency links. Some are wide open with a keyword difficulty of zero. We ran fourteen ring-town queries through Ahrefs on 6 July 2026, country GB. Here is the map.

The full table

Volume is Ahrefs’s monthly search estimate for the GB market. Difficulty (KD) is Ahrefs’s own 0 to 100 score for how hard it is to rank in the top ten. CPC is the average Google Ads bid in GBP. Traffic potential is what the current number-one URL for each keyword actually receives from all its ranked terms combined, which is a truer picture of the traffic on the table than volume alone.

Reading the map

Three groups fall out of that table.

Group 1: locked shut

“web design manchester” at KD 63 is the only genuinely hard keyword in Greater Manchester. To rank in the top ten for it a site needs a Domain Rating in the 40 to 70 band and years of link-building. See our sister SERP-audit post: MadeByShape sits at DR 72 with over 13,000 GB visits a month to its homepage, and it is still only rank six. “web design stockport” at KD 45 is the next tier down. Not impossible, but a new site is not touching it in year one.

Group 2: wide open

Four keywords in the table have a KD of 0 or 1 with real search volume behind them:

  • web design cheshire: 700 searches per month at KD 1, CPC £6. The largest open surface in the region. The head-term SERP is soft because Manchester-city agencies do not target it and Chester agencies do not compete for it hard either.
  • web design altrincham: 250 searches per month at KD 0, CPC £3. Hale, Bowdon, Timperley, Altrincham town centre. Wealthy catchment, no incumbent shop dominating the SERP.
  • web design warrington: 300 searches per month at KD 9, CPC £2.50. Stockton Heath, Grappenhall, Warrington town centre. Very soft SERP.
  • web design wilmslow: 30 searches per month at KD 0. Small volume, but a Wilmslow or Alderley Edge buyer at £3 CPC is a serious ticket.

Combined that is roughly 1,280 monthly searches at KD 9 or below. That is a real content programme for a competent shop with clean local schema and honest town-level landing pages.

Group 3: thin but honest

“web design lymm” at 50 a month, “web design didsbury” at 50, “web design chorlton” at 10, “web design ancoats” at 10. Ahrefs cannot score difficulty at this volume with any confidence. What these queries do is give you honest hyper-local landing pages that a Lymm accountant or a Didsbury cafe owner will actually respond to when they arrive.

You do not build these pages to farm the keyword. You build them because when a Chorlton hairdresser searches Google Maps for “web designer near me” and lands on your “web design in Chorlton” page, the trust question is answered before she reads the price. The traffic is small. The conversion rate is not.

What the CPC column tells you

Read the CPC column separately. It is the price advertisers are willing to pay per click in Google Ads. That number is a proxy for the commercial value of the buyer clicking, and it correlates with the ticket size of jobs closed off the keyword. A few things stand out on the ring:

  • “web design cheshire” at £6 CPC is the highest-value soft-KD keyword on the ring. Cheshire buyers spend more on websites than the average Greater Manchester small business.
  • “web design manchester” at £4.50 CPC is high but not the highest, because the ad auction is diluted by a lot of very-small-business buyers alongside the enterprise clients.
  • “web design altrincham” £3, “web design bolton” £3, “web design warrington” £2.50: honest small-business ticket sizes.
  • “web design stockport” at £0.80 CPC is the surprise. High volume, real difficulty, but low advertiser willingness to pay. Reads as a smaller-average-ticket buyer market than the wealthier Cheshire fringes.

Which searches Polar Web plays for

We do not chase the Manchester head-term. It will not rank for a new site in year one. What we build for, on our packs page and our town landing pages, is the wide-open group and the honest hyper-local group. Named towns on every page. Altrincham, Hale, Bramhall, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Lymm, Stockton Heath, Warrington centre, Salford Quays, Ancoats, Chorlton, Didsbury, Stretford, Urmston, Horwich, Bolton centre. Same packs, same prices, same three to six week timeline.

How we pulled this

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer overview endpoint, 14 keywords, country GB, 6 July 2026. Metrics reported: volume, difficulty, CPC, traffic potential. CPC values were returned in USD cents and converted to GBP at a rounded 0.78 rate for readability. Where Ahrefs did not return a difficulty score for very-low-volume queries we recorded “Not scored” rather than substituting a guess. This is a snapshot: keyword difficulty moves as ranking pages change. If a number here has moved, tell us and we will re-run.
